“It takes too much time.” This is one of the major complaints I hear from readers about shopping at Goodwill. I will agree that a thorough Goodwill trip can take three (or more) hours. Who has two or three hours to peruse the racks for Goodwill gold?! *raises hand* A short forty-five minutes between meetings or before picking up your kids from school is a more realistic time limit for a Goodwill trip. Goodwill shopping is a marathon, but make the most efficient use of your time with the four time saving tips below.
- Search by color. Do you only wear neutrals or lean more towards bright colors and prints? If your local Goodwill organizes sections by color like mine, this is a huge time saver! Only search the colored sections that coordinate with your current wardrobe. If I’m short on time, I look strictly at prints. It only takes me a few seconds to decide whether I like a print.
- Only browse your size. Goodwill stores in my area also organize by size. Don’t spend precious time browsing sizes that don’t fit. If I have more time, I skim other sizes because items may be misplaced or incorrectly tagged.
- Shop on weekdays. Goodwill is less busy during the week so it’s easier to navigate the aisles, and the checkout lines aren’t as long. Look at your local Goodwill’s social media channels to find the dates of sales and don’t go on those days. Sometimes saving time is a trade-off for getting the best deal. (It’s still Goodwill so it’s still a win-win.)
- Stick to familiar brands. If you’re short on time, skip the dressing rooms. Look for familiar brands that have consistent sizing and fit you well. Also ask about your local store’s return policy!
